This performance is a dedication to the 120th anniversary of one of the greatest composers of the 20thcentury - George Gershwin. The programme features many pieces from Gershwin’s vastly popular songbook, but in brand new arrangements by New York’s trombonist and arranger David Gibson.
“I arranged this music, first and foremost, to be a tailored frame for the amazing Shenel Johns. My other aim was to reimagine the settings for the original themes and offer both - an unconventional and compelling narrative that offers surprises for both listener and musician, while remaining true to the original spirit of the compositions.” – David Gibson
With a voice that embodies grace and passion and a personal style that sways effortlessly from jazz to R&B to gospel, Shenel Johns has emerged as one of the shining stars of her generation. She has already shared the stage with music royalty, including Curtis Fuller, Hank Jones, Dionne Warwick and Sheila Jordan, and has performed and recorded with an impressive array of leaders in the field, including Dominic Farinacci, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Ulysses Owens, Jr., Ronnie Burrage and Eddie Palmieri, among others.
“One of the most talented emerging artists in jazz.” – Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola
“I’m so excited and honoured to work with the Latvian Radio Big Band. They are incredible musicians and they have great energy - this concert is going to be amazing, I can’t wait!” – Shenel Johns
